I Piani di Castelluccio sono piane carsiche: conche chiuse tra le montagne, senza un fiume che le attraversi in superficie. L'acqua non scorre via, scende. Se ne va nel sottosuolo attraverso inghiottitoi e doline — imbuti naturali scavati dall'acqua nella roccia calcarea — e questo è il motivo per cui la piana resta piatta, fertile e senza sbocco visibile.The Piani di Castelluccio are karst plains: basins sealed among the mountains, with no river crossing them on the surface.
